The game has an identity that is easy for any lover of the genre to identify, pulling particularly from the beloved Spongebob Squarepants cartoon which itself is a major reference to Rocko's Modern Life and other cartoons in that category that straddle the line of tongue-in-cheek adult humor and childlike whimsy. Peppino bends and stretches in a manner that would be familiar to any fans of cartoons from the '80s and '90s.
It also balances this out with a very distinct visual style. Like Cuphead before it, the game asks players to master many different skills in order to proceed and acquire the highest ranks in each level.
